On her eleventh birthday, Lily Evans recieved a perfectly pure white Lily. She never guessed who it was from, but the next year, when she turned twelve, she recieved yet another perfect white lily. This continued for every birthday she ever had after that. When Lily reached seveth year, and was going out with James, she did think that perhaps these lilies were his doing, but he insisted that he had oly given her the necklace with a doe charm on. It was only on her last birthday, her 21st birthday, that she realised that all of these lilies were from Severus, her best friend, who she hadn’t talked to in years.
Lily wrote a note to Severus, forgiving him, but despite her Gryffindor courage, she could never bring herself to send it to him. When she and James and baby Harry went into hiding, it was lost amongst Harry’s toys. The night the Potters died, it fluttered away from the flames, and landed in Severus’s hand as he stumbled into Harry’s bedroom, distraught. He read it as he stared at Lily’s body in shock, and then the tears really began to flow, as he realised that, in the end, she had forgiven him, but she could never tell him personally. That note was the last thing Severus ever read out in his head in Lily’s voice - after that night, it hurt too much.
